2018 Raìca - Sarraiola Bianco

$68.00

Producer | Raìca

Region | Sardinia

Variety | Vermentino

Alcohol | 14.5%

From mostly 50 years old plants bush trained Vermentino, grown in the ‘Colli del Limbara’ (surrounding the highest peak of Gallura at 1326 meters), in a northeast-exposed vineyard around 500 meters above the sea level. Organic and biodynamic principles are applied in the vineyards and also copper and sulfur are reduced to a minimum due to the generally extremely dry conditions. Picked at perfect maturation, part of the grapes ferments on skins for about 4 days, then remain is immediately pressed and fermented spontaneously. After that, the wine spends 6 months on fine lees before being bottled just after spring. The exposure to the west, the frequent contact with the Mistral wind, the proximity to the sea contribute to reveal great iodized notes in this wine.

Mediterranean herbs, salt and ripe fruits notes of ripe apricot, golden apple, citrus, but also acacia, vermouth herbs. Great balance despite the alcoholic ‘push’. Very savoury and musky with a saline/mineral finish. Unique style of Vermentino.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Cinzia Pellazza and Eugenio Bocchino had always been enchanted by Sardinia’s landscape and dreamed of setting up a winery there. So in 2016 they bought seven hectares of land, which already included a couple of hectares of almost 50-year old Vermentino vines and Raìca was born. To the existing Vermentino they have added other varieties such as Pascale di Cagliari, Nuragus and Semidano. Their goal has been to create a ‘laboratory’ of sustainable viticulture, focusing on local traditions and native grapes varieties.

Raìca wines are a great expression of place. Their ‘minerality’ reflects the stony soil in which the vines grow. The surrounding olive trees, myrtle bushes and woodlands give the wines a strong Mediterranean character.
