I Castagnucoli

Cinto Euganeo (PD) - VENETO

I Castagnucoli is located in the southern part of the Euganei hills, in Cinto Euganeo. Nicola Del Santo, who has been leading the vineyard since 2010 is a former archaeologist. The vineyard was planted by his father, a former teacher, in the 1970s. By the 1990s the vineyard was certified organic.

Nicola grew up on the vineyard but ended up leaving. When he came back it was his father who taught him how to make wine. But Nicola has also been influenced by friends in the region trying new techniques, particularly for making natural wine: Alfonso Soranzo (Monteforche), Filippo Gamba (La Costiera), and Marco Buratti (Farnea).

The knowledge that Nicola has obtained has been put to good use across many small plots, some of them rented. Across a total of 2.5 hectares Nicola has planted an amazing variety of grapes: Moscato Giallo, Glera, Garganega, Marzemina Bianca, Merlot, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Raboso, Corbinella, Pataresca, Turchetta and Cavarara.

The vineyard is heavily grassed and is treated sparingly with only copper and sulphur. The winemaking is undertaken with only natural yeast. There is no clarification nor filtration, and no sulphur dioxide is added to the wine. Vinification takes place in steel and fiberglass containers and Spanish giare. For some of the reds small wooden barrels are used.

Nicola's work comes from a love of the land on which he grew up. His goal is to improve it, increasing and safeguarding biodiversity.
