Sàgona
Loro Ciuffenna (AR) - TUSCANY
Sàgona is located in Pratomagno, in the province of Arezzo. This small mountain farm is in hilly, wild territory, 500 meters above sea level. Far from tourist sites and surrounded by dry stone walls, the farm sits in a narrow valley. It is part of a diverse ecosystem of vineyards, olive trees, fruit orchards, and potato and legume crops. The vineyard is managed by Daniele Corrotti with the help of his family and friends.
The vineyard is made up of very small plots totalling four hectares. The average age of the vines is around 40 years. The vines are pruned and trained according to a traditional Tuscan method known as Archetto Capovolto (also called Arched Guyot or Curved Guyot). The soil is a mix of sand, clay and sedimentary rocks.
The vineyard is farmed according to organic principles. Tiny quantities of copper and sulphur are used only when necessary. The vines are pruned thoughtfully, grass is left to grow amongst the vines, and organic material left over from the production of oil is used to fertilise the soil.
There are two picking times during harvest. The first is in mid-September for whites and young reds. The remaining grapes are left in the vineyard until mid-October for further selection. The yields are kept very low to improve the quality of the fruit and the expression of ‘terroir’. Daniele's goal is to ‘be a farmer in the best possible way’.
The wines are made from only native varieties: Sangiovese for the most part, but also Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Bianca and Trebbiano. The wine is made with as little intervention as possible. Fermentation is generally done in concrete tanks and is spontaneous, without temperature control. There is no raking and no clarifying agents are used. Very light filtration is performed when needed, to preserve the integrity of wine production. The addition of sulphites is limited to what is strictly necessary. Maturations is slow and late. The vineyard produces an average of 13000 bottles per vintage across four wines.
Sàgona’s wines speak of the mountains, combining unmistakable, elegant Tuscan, flavours, with the rustic, peasant character of the area.
